August - 1989 Panoramic view of the archaeological site of the city of Palmyra located in the middle of the Syrian desert. On the left the temple dedicated to the Mesopotamian divinity Baal. Palmyra, also called the Bride of the Desert, was in ancient times the capital of the important Kingdom of Palmyra, a short-lived empire ruled by Queen Zenobia in contrast to the Roman Empire in the 3rd century AD.
