INDONESIA - Central Java

Around the year 1000 AD, a tremendous eruption of the Merapi volcano devastated the central territories of the island of Java, Indonesia. The largest Buddhist temple of all time, built two centuries earlier, was literally submerged in ashes and lapilli, later generating the legend of the mountain-temple that disappeared in the jungle.
