Jharia - Coal mine
October - 2019. In Jharia the depths of the earth have been burning for over a century. The exploitation of the site was started in the second half of the 19th century by the British through excavation of tunnels by hand with picks. In 1916 the first underground fires developed for self-combustion of gas and coal dust and have increased uncontrollably since the state company decided in the 70s, to reduce costs and for safety, to change the way of extraction, from mine gallery to open-air mine.
